This policy explains what Emojist ("Emojist", "the app") does and does not do with your information. It is written in plain language.
Information we collect
Emojist does not collect personal data. There is no account and no sign-in, and the developer does not receive, store, or retain information about you. Some data is used only on your device:
- Your customizations: the keywords, phrases, Quick Trigger shortcuts, per-emoji settings, and favorites you edit
- Automatic on-device backups of those customizations (the last ten)
These are ordinary files in the app's own folder in your Library. You can export them, import them, or delete them at any time.
How Emojist reads your typing
Emojist's whole job is to notice when a word you type matches an emoji and to insert it. To do that it observes your keystrokes system-wide, which is why macOS asks you to grant Accessibility and Input Monitoring. This all happens locally, in real time:
- Keystrokes are held only in a small in-memory buffer of the current word, matched against the built-in keyword list, and then discarded.
- What you type is never written to disk, saved to a history, put in a log, or transmitted off your Mac.
- Emojist stays silent in terminals, code editors, and password managers (an editable list), and it never runs in secure password fields, where macOS blocks monitoring by design.
- You can pause all matching at any time from the menu bar or with a shortcut.
What Emojist does not do
- No accounts and no sign-in
- No advertising
- No analytics, telemetry, or tracking
- No history or log of what you type
- Nothing sold or shared, ever
Network access
Emojist is offline by design. The single exception is its updater: to tell you when a new version is available, it periodically fetches an update feed at appsbymo.app over HTTPS, and downloads a new version only when you choose to. That request contains no personal data and nothing you have typed. Emojist makes no other network calls, on a timer or otherwise.
Permissions
Emojist asks for two macOS permissions, and each only enables a feature:
- Input Monitoring lets Emojist see the words you finish typing so it can suggest and insert emoji.
- Accessibility lets Emojist type the emoji into the app you are using, and read a current text selection for the Apply and Strip commands.
If you do not grant them, Emojist still opens; the typing features simply stay off until you do.
Third-party services
None. Emojist has no third-party SDKs, no advertising or analytics services, and no hosted backend. The only server it ever contacts is the update feed described above.
Data retention
Because the developer never receives your data, there is nothing for the developer to retain. Your customizations and backups remain on your device until you remove them or uninstall the app.
Your choices
You control every permission the app requests in System Settings → Privacy & Security, and you can change or revoke it at any time. You can also pause Emojist, exclude specific apps, export or delete your data, and reset everything to defaults from within the app. Denying a permission only disables the related feature; the rest of the app keeps working.
Children's privacy
Emojist is a general-audience utility. It does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the date above will be updated. Material changes will appear here before they take effect.
